External hard-drive question

Scuse me for being dumb, again, but I have a Novatech external hard-drive, and I'm not sure what the middle socket is for. I know it's a USB, but why is it there?

The one on the right and the left goes to the PC, but what does the other one do?
I can plug my D200 into it, but what's the point in that? It doesn't 'do' anything when I've tried it!!

Therre's a good chance it'll be to gain additional power from the use of a 2nd USB port on your PC Andy. Some drives won't register in Windows if the power supply isn't enough to fire them up. Don't know why but it is an issue with some. My external drive has a double socket lead on it for this exact same purpose.

judging from the socket type i'd hazard a guess it's some kind of link thru so you can piggy back another device, similar to scsi devices. I'd also guess it only works when there is an external power supply connected to the drive too.

Do you have no manufacturer info on this?

It came as a 'white box' kind of thing. No instructions or nothing.
The socket on the right is for additional power.
So Guy yes you are right, but like I said, that's the socket on the right hand side, for which I have a second cable for.

Can you not set your camera to store the image taken onto the hard drive instead of the storage card in the camera?

Might be handy in a studio setting.

I'll have a look through the manual, as you say this could be a good thing on occasions!
 
The additional USB socket is usually for daisy chaining additional USB devices. If you have another USB device free, try plugging it into the spare socket and seeing if it works.

Ah nice one, I'll give this a go.

Doesn't seem to be an option to have pics stored straight onto it......

My last post was just to help you identify what the additional USB socket on the drive is for.

I'd imagine your D200 doesn't have the necessary drivers to enable it to write directly to a USB drive.

You can use it to daisy chain another ext drive or simply use it as an extra USB socket to which you can plug in any other USB device, the power from the drive must be on though.
