External hard drive....

I use the Western Digital My Books Essentials.

I buy whatever is the cheapest per Gigabyte of storage at the time, which is usually the biggest or one down from the biggest that they do.

Last ones I bought were 2TB USB 3.0, if I were buying now the cheapest would be the 3TB version.

I posted on the business forum as I though many there would be into storage.

There really isn't a "bad" HDD manufacture, all of them get problem batches now and then. You need good _verified_ backups and for really important data multiple copies.

AT the moment Samsung 2TB drives offer most value for money, you can buy your own external caddy for USB2/3 or ESata.
 
Depending on the size really, and by size I mean whether you want 2.5" or 3.5" hdd. Generally 3.5" hdd is cheaper but also bulkier.
What you need to consider was mentioned above regarding connection.

maxtor - Who? Seriously though, they've been part of Seagate for a while now.

ibm "deathstars" - Ancient history again, I think it's stuck in peoples mind more because of the deskstar model name rhyming with deathstar than anything else. Yes they did have a problem, but how many generations ago (hdd wise) are we talking about here. ;)
 
Still wouldn't touch maxtor with someone else's data, even the new ones have died a plenty. Don't let that put you off seagate though, while they're the same ownership seagate only bought maxtor for access to certain copyrights, they're operated as seagates budget brand sister now.
 
I fairly recently bought a Seagate Expansion 1.5TB which I cant fault, paid about £55 IIRC, so I would expect you would be able to pick up a 2TB version for the same kind of money now.
 
Seagate look to be the cheapest at the moment [1-2TB desktop USB versions]
I've used a couple of the 2.5" portable drives and so far so good, also seem pretty fast considering there are portable and only USB2
 
1-2 TB is about the best value per gigabyte nowadays, shocking, 500GB was the best value only a year ago when i bought mine.
