External HD Mac and PC usage??

Over the weekend I was looking at some images, which I had stored on an external HD, though a MAC.

The images had been processed on a PC.

I could read the images from the external HD but I could not write any images back onto the HD when processed on a MAC.

I do require this facility in future to swap between mac and pc....Do I have to format the External HD on a Mac and if so will it then effect the PC usage ??
 
Its probably formatted in NTFS, Macs wont write to it with out add on software. If you format it fat32 then both will read and write.
 
I am guessing it is an NTFS partition...in which case your OS X can read but not write to the drive natively. You can however get some software that will enable it to do just that :)

The only file format that both Windows and OS X will both read/write to is FAT32 (I think...) which is pretty much useless for large hard drives!

You would probably be best transferring them over a network, as you can write to NTFS from your OS X so long as it goes through a Windows PC.....that is, if you don't want to spend any money :)
 
To be able to have a drive read and write on both PC and MAC it has to be formatted to FAT32. Either that or use a piece of software on the Mac that enables it to write to an NTFS formatted drive
 
Much better to install the drivers to allow Windows to read HFS+, rather than linstalling the NTFS drivers on OSX.
The HFS drivers were written by apple, while the NTFS drivers were reverse engineered by third party developers as NTFS is a propriatory format. Guess which is likely to be the more stable and reliable.
I think the HFS drivers will be included with bootcamp on SnowLeopard when it's released.
 
You need a bit of software called NTFS for OSX from Paragon. This updates the read only NTFS option within the mac to read/write.

You can download a 15 day trial from Paragon to see if it's what you want.

I downloaded the trail version then ordered from Apple. You simply add your license number to update the trial version.

I use this software, as I switch between OSX and Windows a lot, and it works like a charm.
