just wondered what ( if any external storage people use for there media when on hols.
I dont mean a USB drive or taking away there laptops with them.
what im on about ( and know there are some available ) is a mains/battery powered portable hard drive enclosure with built in card reader.
so rather than have the need for a laptop you can just plug in your sd card and transfer all the data from it no matter where you are.

i know there are several like the colourspace hyperdrive and digital foci photosafe , but these are expensive and not many places in UK seem to have them.

im off on hols shortly and dont really want to take the laptop with me. so the choice is either get a bunch of sd cards or try and get a one of the storage devices.

i have seen them on ebay before for around £50 for 120GB battery/mains one that has a little lcd screen and 8 in 1 card reader.
perfect for when out and about.. but for the life on me can only find the ones listed above in the USA and all are £150 and upwards.
 
If you require light weight, portable & storage then those are your 2 options. Most of the others require a laptop...
 
thinking maybe a little 10" netbook with 320gb HDD may be the way to go.. can pick one up for around £50 second hand on fleabay and it'll give me enough storage space for weeks hols, plus i have a 250gb portable usb drive i can take along which will add more. plus i can at least view the images on something like that as well
 
Try having a look for something like this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ma2250_250GB_HyperDrive_COLORSPACE_UDMA2.html I had a similar device but broke it and haven't got round to replacing it but when I do I think it'll be with one of these. Have a look at the full page at B&H as there's likely to be a good range of sizes and prices.

I ended up taking a netbook instead when I broke my gadget but still found it quite bulky, now I've got a tablet computer with a card reader and USB hard drive. It's a bit slower to get it done but the size and weight are a bonus.

yeah thats wht i looked at , but at that price a netbook is a far more useful ( and cheaper option ). there was a much older 120gb one i saw that had black and white/greyscale LCD screen for about £50. long since discontinued but crops up on ebay... think an acer aspire one is the answer though.. 1.6gh cpu, 2gb ram windoze and choice of 250 or 320gb hard drive with 10.1 inch screen.. second hand between £50-75 .. just enough power to at a push run elements 12 or LR5 too.

I just use CF cards. How much do you shoot on holiday?? I'd not trust my files to a portable mechanical hard drive: Far too fragile. SSDs are not cost effective just as a storage medium. I just make sure I have enough space on CF/SD cards to last me the time I'm away.

Stopping machine gunning helps too :)

I'd just get a bunch of SD cards. You don't need ultra fast ones.. they're a rip off... your camera can probably only write to them at around 25MB/sec anyway. SD cards are cheap as chips. Just buy a fistful.

I use 2 x 1Tb SSHD's - cannot afford to put 4-6000 pictures on CF...(not at 600 pics on a 32Gb card) - 10 x 32Gb Lexar CF 1000x = £1100

at home i have plenty of storage , its just wanted a viable option if i was somewhere without a laptop. but the think tank storage devices are just to expensive. so i guess netbook it'll have to be

Who the hell shoots 4 to 6000 images on holiday?? LOL
 
You people need discipline :)

If this was pre-digital, you'd have shot 55 rolls of film to get 2000 shot, and 166 rolls to get 6000 shots :)

Last time I went on holiday and took gear with me, I shot around 300 images.

To shoot 6000 you must just be literally photographing everything you come across... LOL Shoot any more and you'll be able to play it back as a cine film.. LOL
 
Shot 1800 just on a Friday at Goodwood FOS...

Aiming on a African Safari next year & loosely speaking am working on Min 1000 pictures a day..... suspect more if I see stuff ...lol.
You get the correct storage for your needs.

How do you get the time to view/edit/enjoy 6000 pictures !
 
Problem solved.. i just won a 10.1 " netbook on ebay for £45.. "gb Ram, and "50Gb Hard drive.. has all important sd slot so plenty of space for storage and transfer and also allows me to view and do any quick edits/deletes..

I'm in the Pookeyhead camp.

If I see a potential shot, I set the camera shoot (sometimes bracket if its tricky), move on.

The most I have ever taken over a month was 2000 slides on a trip to India.
The cost was about £400, that was in 1995.

So half a dozen 8gig SD cards with a camera taking 18/19 MB files or 4/500 shots a card more than does me on a trip.

sandisk pro extreme 8gb card on wex is £27 ( hunt around and might find it for say £20. thats around £100 for enough cards.

much more reasonable is the transcend 8gb Ultimate for around £8 ( or £12 for 16gb card ).
thats about £40 ( based on getting 5 cards )
the notebook cost me £45 so think it worked out pretty well as it gives me the ability to check what ive shot while away and if ive had a bit of a shooting distaster i can see and hopefully have chance to go back and reshoot.

still i may just get a couple of 16gb Transcend cards anyway, always handy to have a few and at £12 free delivery on amazon cant go wrong.
