Seem to have an active brain this afternoon, and I am wondering (if you need good length) what's best...

• 70-200 f/2.8 on a 1.6 cropped sensor (like a Canon 400D)
• 70-200 f/2.8 plus 1.4/2.0 TC on full frame (like a Canon 5D Classic)

Define "best".

If you want the most pixels on your target then you have to look at how many pixels each camera offers, not just the sensor size.

This is an old graphic I made a year or two ago, and it doesn't have the newest DSLRs on it, but I think it illustrates the issue.

I think the crop camera output would be better. You will have maximum pixels without the optical interference of the TC. You will also gain about a stop of extra depth of field.

You will retain full AF with all options.

Erm... best quality pics. So combination of resolution, sharpness, colour rendition, etc

I think the crop camera output would be better.

Aha, I wondered if that might be the case. My thinking was that I don't really do much telephoto stuff and my longest length is 200mm on FF, which for an airshow will not be enough I suspect. And I suddenly thought, I bet I could borrow a 400D for a weekend.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
