I was just hunting google on the off chance that there might be some app or something to give a proper macro setting on my HTC Desire, when I found this page. No Idea how genuine this is, but might spark some ideas or inspiration with people to come up with other ideas and certainly looks like it would be fun if nothing else.

Macro Phoneography?

I did a little bit of this once with my old LG phone (and the lens from inside an old DVD player), I'll get you my photos if I can find them a little later.

Found'em!

Taken with LG GW520 and a crappy Asda DVD player lens - not as good as the photos you linked to, unfortunately.

'980' from '1980' on a one penny coin:

interesting effects.

I wouldn't exactly call it a precise art. My DVD player lens was duck tape mounted to the camera, and since the spherical side has to face the phone, there was no way to get it consistently parallel (not with my limited patience, anyway). Then again, if you do manage to mount the lens in a decent, solid mount, you may well be able to avoid the horrifically soft effects I got.

I actually cracked the plastic covering the camera on my old phone doing this, so I would advise caution if you're going to give it a go.

oddly its the old LG Viewty I have that I am tempted to try it with - it was always pretty useless as phone, the camera was acceptable but nowhere near the one on the HTC I have now, but as a phone for experimenting with... :naughty:
