Hi,

Have any of you used eye-fi cards for studio work or any other work and if so how do you find it? Has it been used to an extended time period? Say a few hours or so?

Is it reliable, fast, and so on...........any issues?

I have recently borrowed an eye-fi card and have run a few test shots off with it and seems to work well, was using it in a Canon 60d (also borrowed as my 5d doesnt have an sd card slot and doesnt work very well if at all with a cf to sd card adaptor)

I think it depends what your transfering it for, i think on the higher models you can have it just transfer jpgs and save RAW's so you could use it for instant preview on monitors at a lower res but still have the RAW for processing later...
 
When I had my Canon 1DsMk3 all I used in the SD card slot was a 4GB Eye-Fi Pro Card. This fed small jpgs straight to the computer whilst the CF card had the RAW files.

Plenty fast enough for studio work, unless you are machine gunning images.

Now in my 5DMk2 it's a completely different story, the same card in a CF adapter seems to take an age to transfer even a small jpg to the computer in jpg and raw mode and whilst it works, it means that it is too slow for normal use. I suspect it would be faster if I shot small jpg only, but then I would not get the benefits from shooting raw and might as well use a lower definition camera in the first place.
 
I use an Eye-Fi card for events that I do (mainly Black Tie Events, proms etc), which are downloaded straight away onto my pc and then available to view on multiple viewing stations. I only shoot medium jpg though so there is no issue with download speed, and it uses the endless memory function which deletes photos from the card once it has reached a specified capacity and they have been successfully downloaded.

Hi Harry,

Thanks for the reply. Thats very interesting that you use it for events as its something I had been wondering about (as in if it was a reliable enough bit of kit for this use)

Have you found it to be a reliable way of getting the images from camera to pc?

Have you had any issues at all?

I was recommended it by several event photographers on another forum, and it seemed the only viable solution for me to transfer my images from my 450D to the PC whilst running an event.

Touch wood, I have had no issues with it, but I always try and stay within 10-15ft of my router and in line of sight. From other peoples experience, it seems to be a lot more stable and have much higher transfer speeds when using a router/access point rather than using direct mode and communicating with the PC directly.

Once I ran the software initially and had added my network to it, and registered it online, it's been pretty painless since, and has caused me no hassles as of yet (touch wood!!).

I use one in my D90 when shooting indoor sports like judo/karate/badminton/etc. where I tend to shoot 5 or 6 frames in rapid succession (frame rate of the D90 is 5fps) and then pause for a bit until the next interesting bit of action takes place. With this shooting pattern I haven't had any issues with transfer speeds but I do only send a medium quality jpg to the laptop and save the RAW on the card.
