Nd filter reducing light by 1 f stop

is one f stop e.g from 5 to 5.6? As in one turn of the wheel?

Or is it more complicated?

Thanks

One stop means doubling (or halving ) the light reaching the sensor (or film).

The "usual" stops are:

F2.0, 2.8, 4.0, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32.

With this sequence the amount of light halves with every stop up the sequence.

For example f2.8 has only half the light of f2.0.

Most digital cameras will go up in 1/3 stops for greater accuracy in exposure.

f5 is about a half stop between f4.5 and f5.6

Stops are

f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f22.

Or - 1 sec, 1/2 sec, 1/4 sec, 1/8 sec, 1/15 sec, 1/30 sec etc.

Each stop lets in 1/2 as much might as the next, or 2x. Depends on which way you go up the scale.

Great minds Jerry - lol.
