F-stop - how important?

No
I want to upgrade my kit lens which covers 18-70mm at f3.5-5.6.

One expert has told me he would always buy lenses from the camera manufacturer, but Sony's current offering of 16-80mm is still only F3.5-4.5 whereas a Sigma lens is 17-70mm at F2.8-4.

Given a price comparison of £599 for Sony to £280 for Sigma, which is my best bet?

I'm prepared to pay for the Sony as I've got a great camera and want to invest in lenses now so as they cover a similar focal range, how important is the F-stop?

thanks
Lulu

Half a stop difference at either end of the zoom range probably wont make any noticeable difference. Look at sharpness and focussing accuracy, I'm guessing the Sony will be sharper but if you never pixel peep or print bigger than A3 then the Sigma might be the better option.

You'll need to research the IQ of each kens, the Sony may be sharper, or the sigma may suffer CA.
Should find plenty if reviews on both lenses to help you decide.
The sigma being two stops faster will slow for shooting in lesser light conditions, so it also depends on what you want the lens for.
