Canon 70-200 F4 L vs Sigma 70-200 F2.8

Ive had the canon before, was very happy with it, no problems at all, the only reason i got rid of it was because my car needed insurance. I would like the extra F stop but ive read a lot about softness in sigma lenses and it depends if you get a good one. If i bought one second hand then i wouldnt have the guarentee that it would be a good copy and no returns if it wasnt.

Ill maybe use it for other stuff like wildlife but mainly any races i can get to, most gp's are in sunlight so i dont think the extra stop will matter too much...

soooo, which one would you pick?
 
Will the 200 be long enough??? specially for moto GP

Will be interested in this answer as I will be at the moto GP in Laguna seca this year.

I dont know? ive never tried it before, on a crop sensor it would be equivalent to 280mm? and then if it isnt long enough, would a 1.4x tc be worth it?
 
The reason I said about it being long enough is when I bought my 100-400 I considered the 70-200 with a 1.4 converter and got told not too as the image quality would not be there also it would be too slow.
 
If I had to choose I would probably look at which can use the 2 x TC with better results.

200mm is a little short for motorsports I think so you would want the extra reach, obviously a 300/400 f/2.8 would be ideal but now your talking money.

The other option is the 100-400mm, I use it for motorsports and even then I am usually on the 400mm end of things, I know that the 70-200 f/2.8 is comparable to the 100-400mm but the 70-200 f/4 im not sure will AF unless you tape the pins and even then you will get a aperture of f/8!!
 
Search the boards there are at least two really good tests done to compare the 100-400 to 70-200 with 1.4 TC and 2X TC. Personally I bought the 100-400 before the 70-200 specifically for motorsports and have no regrets. 100-400 is SOOO versatile and great IQ. It's weakness is aperture at 5.6 on the long end. Not a problem with most new bodies and the ISO handling but on an overcast day you have to push the the ISO up far to maintain shutter speeds.
 
The only thing being the 100-400 is 2.5x more expensive haha, is the image quality of the 70-200 with a 1.4x tc on so bad that I wouldn't be able to crop in tight and then print at 6x4, or show on an iPad? I don't really print a lot of my photos, I just enjoy taking them, looking for maybe 2-3 days and moving on to the next set, unless I really like it, then I'll maybe print it or put it in a separate folder
 
Two problems:

1) Both race series use pretty much the same tracks and those tracks for F1 have run off areas measured in km.

2) Bike are even smaller than cars.

I'd say you need at least 300mm, probably 400mm unless you want just little tiny cars or microscopic bikes in the frame
 
I'd agree with others....Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 is a cracker of a lens (use a monopod if only to rest your arms) for motorsport, amongst many other things
