f2.8 35mm usm.

the sigma 30mm 1.4 is a great little lens... provided you get a good copy, its pin sharp, and focuses well in low light
 
Or the Canon 28mm 1.8 USM. Not used it myself, but seems to fit the bill?
 
To be honest, f/2.8 isn't enough for indoor work, you really need f/1.8 or wider.
 
Another vote for Sigma 30 1.4. For a 'standard' focal length on a crop camera, it's hard to beat. I have one. F/2.8 isn't really fast at all.
 
I have the 30mm sigma and really like it for general low light fun,. works at pub lighting level very nicely.
I'm not often in Nottingham anyone though, otherwise would pop along to your event and let you borrow it for a test drive, or vice versa. My next event I'm covering in notts is July 12th
