Well where are they, ive been waiting for them for ages and I think its about bloody time they made them. Anyone got any news on them?
 
They're just too difficult to make economically....
 
Olympus make them for the m4/3 market. I'd wince at the size and price a dSLR one would be. Don't really need an f/2 zoom though.

Given that the Canon 17-55mm F2.8 is £700+ new, I think anyone thinking of spending more than that on an EF-S zoom would rather buy a full frame camera. And I couldn't imagine how much a 24-70mm F2 zoom would be when you consider the new 24-70mm F2.8 II is £2,200+ new!

No they don't, they make them for 4/3 only, and they are exceptionally good lenses on a par with and in some conditions better than equivalent L lenses.

My LX5 has an f2 zoom! :lol:

its also a miss-conception that crop lenses are smaller/lighter than full frame

£1800-2000 for it where as a 70-200 f2.8 is cheaper.

How is it a misconception? Crop lenses project a smaller image circle so can be made smaller and lighter.
The high prices of the top of the range zuikos are arguably reflected in their performance.

More 70-200 f2.8s are made and sold so economies of scale are going to make it cheaper. What crop/FF lenses are you talking about?

Quite true. The smaller image circle makes optical design much easier, though the benefits quickly run out at longer focal lengths. Manufacturers slice and dice the upsides in different ways.

Compare Canon's EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS against the even more expensive 16-35L 2.8, that can only manage 35mm at the long end, and doesn't have IS.

Or the EF-S 55-250 that offers virtually the same aperture and field of view as the 100-400L does on full frame. But the L lens is nearly twice as long, more than three times the weight, and six times the price.

It's hard to compare apples with apples exactly, but the advantages are fairly obvious.
 
You can't compare lenses with completely different focal lengths for starters.

Why not? they have the same effective field of view when used on their respective format so can be used for the same/similar applications. So it makes sense to compare them.

Why not? And I compared them by equivalent field of view, and also by size and weight, and by cost.

Nope you compared a cheap consumer zoom with a high quality L lens so of course there are going to be differences in weight and price.

It makes the most sense to compare them in terms of field of view (or effective focal length) rather than absolute focal length. Otherwise my IXUS has a 5-20mm lens....

Crop lenses, for the same field of view, are smaller and lighter.

And anyway, as an extreme example, a 5-20mm lens giving a full frame image circle would certainly be bigger and heavier than the one on my compact.

But I do accept that for the same focal length there isn't probably that much difference in lens size between a big or slightly smaller image circle. I suspect HoppyUK understands it better than I do.

Your ixus does have a 5-20mm lens. The difference between crop and ff is not that great to make a huge difference between lenses.

Hypotheticslly a 5-20 lens on an ixus sized sensor camera (with a mirror box) compared to a 5d2 is going to be smaller.

I know it does have a 5-20mm lens. I just don't think that this misconception exists, at least not with anyone I know. Just because people tend to think in terms of FOV/effective FL rather than FL.

The smaller image circle required for crop format and M4/3rds, compared to full frame, makes a big difference with shorter lenses, and less with longer ones.

The cross-over point appears to be around the 100mm zone, eg there are lots of APS-C lenses below this, and very few above it. If you compare the smaller format lenses of similar focal length, they either have greater zoom range, or lower f/numbers, or are smaller/lighter/cheaper.

At the long end, Olympus makes a 300mm f/2.8 for 4/3rds format. It is both bigger and heavier than the Canon full-frame version, and even more expensive.
