Fancy a cheap end-of-line D700?

I was wondering if this was going to happen, since the D800 is such a different beast. I'd love to see a D700s with the D4's 16mp sensor. It'll probably depend a lot on what Canon do with the 5D mkIII.

Maybe Nikon realise that for many, 12mp is plenty and the high ISO performance is what is really required.

I suppose we can hope the 800 may force the D700 price down a bit in time, but really I dont fancy the hassle of dealing with anything up to 70mb files from the D800 when for most of us their is simply no need or visible benefit.
 
It'll be interesting to see if the D700 remains as a separate line, if it does an update is well over due and whilst I can't see the D4 sensor going into it, the one from the now-redundant D3s would make for a nice upgrade...

Spose that the old saying "if it aint broke" doesn't really apply to this then... As why really play around with something thats been a good seller as it stands :shrug:

If it needs updating or improving then why not just make another version/model - then again isn't that why they brought out the D800??

Surely the D700 is an ideal FF body that the "upgrader" from crop bodies is an easier to afford body than the D800....

Well, as I see it there are two scenarios - firstly they just keep pumping out the D700 until demand dries up and it dies a natural death, or they keep it, as you say, as an entry level FF model.

That second scenario throws up an interesting dilemma though, as it is the D700 sits neatly between the higher priced crop bodies and the D800, but what happens when the D800 drops down to £2k? Suddenly a D700 with old technology would be pointless, leading back to point one where it dies and isn't replaced.


On the other hand, upgrading it to a D700s, using the old D3s sensor allows Nikon a few more years of pumping out the same old camera as a "new", at virtually no cost to them....

Think of it in car terms, The miniMetro was supposed to replace the Mini, but there was still demand for the older car, so AR simply kept producing it, with the intention of letting it die a natural death when demand dwindled. As things transpired it went on to outlive the car it replaced by two full years...

Next week Nikon will comment on the availability of the Qashqai and Juke models in the UK :lol:
