I'm having fun with my new Pentax K100D, but I'd be having loads more fun if I had a 50mm f/1.4 to go with it. I'd far prefer KAF (AF and auto aperture control) to KA or K, so a manual lens is out of the question - I have a rubbish Ricoh one and it's too fiddly for the stuff I want to do.

I'm an overdrawn student and would like to spend as very little as possible - and as far as condition goes, if it has a broken filter thread, gouges, purple spots, lens disease, smells funny, small animals trapped inside, I want it anyway.

Also it's only a 6 megapixel sensor, so a less-than-amazingly-sharp lens won't make too much difference.

eBay doesn't have anything at all of use.

Help - where do I go?

Only?? Only 6mp? 6mp on a DSLR is great. I'm not entirely sure what your question was. Are you after a new lens?
 
What Petemc is saying is don't be conned into thinking that more is better where pixels are concerned, often it's worse.

As for a lens, if you are that short of money you can pick up an excellent quality genuine Pentax K mount lens for next to nothing which will do till you can afford a similar KAF.
 
Ah, sorry - yeah, I'm really happy with 6MP - it was just that if get a very very slightly soft lens, I don't think it'll matter as much as a very very slightly soft lens on a 1Ds.

I can buy a Pentax-M f/1.4, but the reason I'm a bit put off manual lenses is that I've just bought an old Riconar 55mm f/2.2 and it's totally unusable at f/5.6 and below (extremely soft focus, huge blobs of glow around sharp highlights, nasty mirror-like bokeh), so there's no point having it over my kit lens.



More significantly, stop-down metering and manual focussing with a really narrow DOF (and then trying again when it doesn't work) in a dim room full of moving people who don't understand why a better camera isn't FASTER than their compact is difficult - they all get up and go away.

I suppose the question is, can I get a fully automatic f/1.4 lens (focal length less important) for cheap (how about £80), and if I can't, can I get used to operating a manual one as fast as an automatic one?
 
I suppose it depends on what you are using it for. Narrow dof on manual will be difficult since your camera will not have a split field focusing screen. However my Canon does tell me when the subject is in focus even when I use my lenses in manual mode, of course I have no idea if the same would apply to a manual only lens.
 
The Samsung GX-1L I have also tells me when in focus on a K len's. I am after a cheap Nifty F1.4 or F2 to play with.. there are some bargins on Ebay !!
