I'm after a fast prime that need to be around f1.4-1.8. All my lens are f2.8 and miss the shallow depth of field my 85mm f1.4 use to give but it was slow so I sold it :'(.

Its going to be used FF on my D3 and will be shooting fashion models in the studio and location.

Budget £200-400 :)

What kinda focal length?

Nikon 50/1.8 is well within budget, as is 50/1.4?
Nikon 35/1.8
Sigma 30/1.4
Nikon 85/1.8

Edit: Somehow missed the fashion shoot part... so I guess the 85 is probably a good length...

Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AFS (or Sigma equiv)

Yeh I did have that Lens but sold it as I had the 85mm f1.4 at the time but now left with no fast prime :'(

Think the 85/1.8 is a good buy ;)

Fashionmodels on location....what about the 105 f2 DC - sharp as a tack at f2.

Bit more than your budget maybe, and possibly as slow as the 85...I use mine manual focus, so couldn't give a toss! (On D3 too).

85 1.8 is a bit under rated I think - but not the build quality of the 1.4. You need to stop it down a click too to get the best out of it. Pretty good wide open but not like the faster one.

the 85mm f1.8D is a very nice lens at a reasonable price. :)

I have never found the 50mm 1.4G to be any faster to focus than the 85mm 1.4G - maybe the Sigma 50mm 1.4 is a bit quicker.

If 2nd hand is an option, you should be able to find a pair of f/1.8s - the 50mm and the 85mm, maybe even an f/1.4 50mm. Given that they'll be stuck on a D3 though, unless you feel you need the extra shallow DoF of the f/1.4, I'm not sure I's bother.

If you want AF I would go for the 85mm f1.8 and or the 50mm f1.8 both produce superb results.
The 85mm will give you that shallow dof you miss.
If you can stretch to either the 105mm or 135mm f2.0 DC lenses you can play with DOF Bokeh all you want, try S/H than do come up at a good price now and again.

i cant argue with that.
i have the 1.4,but didnt have it with me the other day another photographer lent me his 1.8 its a great lens and the price is crazy low compared to some.

I have a Nikkor 85mm F/1.4 AIS and it's the sharpest lens i've ever owned, meters and AF confirm on the pro bodies and D200 upwards with the non CPU lens settings entered

comes highly recommended, you're not having mine though :D

Did look at these a few weeks ago and think they where about £600ish but did look very tempting.

If you do not mind manual focus I would look at a second hand Zeiss 50mm f1.4 planar. if you want to have a play with one I am down in Torquay fairly regularly for work so could meet up.
