Fast wide lens help

Hi,

I'm quite new to photography but want a wide lens that is suitable for night shots as well as day.

I was looking at quite a few particularly the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX, I was wondering if anybody could help out and give additional advice, suggestions regarding other lenses on the market, I don't have the budget of an L lens or anything like that. I have a Canon 500D if that helps.

I'm looking for a range between 10-20mm that could possibly handle night shots well.

any help is appreciated :)

Thanks

Will

I believe there is a tokina 11-16mm 2.8 which is about the fastest ultra wide angle I'm aware of..

edit: re-reading your original question, if you want to do night shots, you'd be better off buying a tripod as with a big aperture you'll have a very shallow depth of field which would be useless for landscapes, if using a tripod the speed of the lens is less important, but handheld with a large aperture and high iso you'd get better results for moving/action stuff (with shallow DoF)so I guess it depends what you want to shoot..?

The other option would be going for a stabilisted lens, unfortunately I'm not aware of any ultra wide angle canon fit stabilised lenses which would give you hand-held-ability, I guess the widest would be the canon 15-85 with the canon 4 stop stabiliser, but stabilisation is only good for static subjects, not moving objects so again it depends on your usage.

Hope that helps.
