Faulty Canon 70-300mm IS USM

Yesterday I mounted my 70-300mm to the 7D for some photography and it started to behave in a very strange way, it's making some weird grinding noises and when I look through the viewfinder the subject is jumping around. I think the IS is faulty but not sure so could someone who knows more about these things take a look and give me an opinion.

Are you mounting the lens with IS turned on?

Did you dismount / turn the lens off while the IS was running?
 
I think a trip off to Canon at Elstree is in order there.

Hope it's not too expensive, Canon do fixed price servicing on some equipment.

That most definitely needs a little holiday unfortunately.
I'm no expert but it's quite likely the IS unit playing up though of course, it could be the unit itself, the ribbon cable or the PCB.
Switch the IS off, does the noise stop? That should tell you if it is or isn't the IS.

I never mount or un-mount a lens with the camera switched on.

Nope, it carries on making the noise.

Annoying thing is it's only just out of warranty.
 
That's odd then.
How far out of warranty? If you contact Canon I'd have thought they'd do the decent thing and sort it FOC, it's not exactly a cheap lens!
