Faulty D2X

Yes
I've been offered a Nikon D2X with a faulty sensor: permanent magenta cast. Worth buying for battery and charger but Nikon repair is prohibitively expensive on the camera. Anypone have any ideas on less expensive route to sensor replacement? I'd hate it to be just a paperweight!

You sure they havent just set the white balance wrong??

I cant see a sensor swap being cheap, and I certainly wouldnt like to try it myself.

Ouch.. Surely not worth it? Unless you can find a similar camera but with a different fault and get a repairer to install the sensor for you.

Definitely not worth it!

Only chance is that I can find a cheaper way to fix it.

magenta cast usually means a shagged out sensor. Had a bridge camera that did this, 5 minutes googling and I had the answer.

A way to test if it really is the sensor that's buggered and not just faulty settings is to intentionally blow a load of whites. If the blown highlights are a solid pinkish/magenta colour, then it's your sensor that's gone. If they are white then it is a setting like a white balance.

If the sensor is knackered then changing the filter isn't going to fix it, it'll still be broken, it'll just owe you £300 more....
i did say give acs a ring they will tell you if its ok to do,
also im no expert, as far as i know it might be possible. just an idea and trying to help.

Camera is not with me yet. I'm getting it as a basket case just for charger and battery, but was hesitant to write off an otherwise mint D2X.

Should have it here later next week so can play with it then and see if cast can be corrected and also whether IR option (or b&w option) might work.

A lot of my shots on my D3x end up in b&w so might not be a total disaster; depends how much the cast deadens the imaging contrast.
