Faulty EF 24-70 f2.8?

Hi guys. I just got second-hand Canon 24-70 f2.8 but I think it's slightly faulty, focusing mechanism. Sometimes it focuses ok, sometimes it goes off just random points. The mm screen you can see that moving inside is tricky as well, see the video http://db.tt/m5OCwR85. Faulty USM? What you think guys? Worth taking to servicing or just let it be as it is?

P.S. I can't return the lens "as friend" has changed his term now...but lucky me I haven't paid full amount in the first place :clap:
 
USM can wear off with time. Does the focusing ring feel stiff or gritty? If yes then it may need servicing.

40D doesn't have the best AF in the world, and may sometimes struggle with this lens.

However if you have issues with the lens, and unless you plan to move to full frame, I would suggest simply moving to 17-55 IS - a better overall lens for crop cameras.

I think, slightly, but can't remember now as I just got angry with it & just used something else in that time; will try again at some point.
I presume USM fixes aren't cheap.

In focal length terms, perhaps, but the 17-55 isn't weather sealed and the build quality is far inferior to the 24-70 so, if those things matter to you...

I switched from the 17-55 to the 24-70 primarily for the weather sealing.
 
H Lehmann are a really good company too, I've just had dealings with them and the service they gave was pretty exceptional
 
The lens is now just collecting dusts on the shelve. It is USM problem and got quote of £360 roughly to repair and recalibrate it. Question now is it worth investing more to fix it or just look something new? I have seen decrease in prices of second hand of this lens recently.
 
Well you have a top line £1k lens just sitting doing nothing, repair and recalibration with receipt will hopefully bring up up to almost like new IQ either for sale or to use yourself. As is you have virtually lost what you paid, £360 doesn't seem a bad price for a calibrated 24-70

But as his 40D is not weather sealed, it negates the need for a weather seal lens.
