Tried using a tripod and they dont appear much better

Any suggestions as jessops are not to keen on refunding me

Can you give me the shutter speeds of them all ?, to rule out camera shake/subject movement. I really need to find that exif viewer...

No worries, ive got my exif viewer now!, the first image is definitely camera shake, 1/60th at 250mm is far to low.
And the other shutter speeds are just about acceptable for the focal length(1/250th), but still low enough for there to be a possibility of shake. Try 1/320 or higher. The 1/Focal Length rule is a guide only, and I find I need to double it for acceptable images at 135mm!

Yep - Sean you got there before me! I would agree 1/250 is right on the limit for 220mm focal length.

Take some images, tripod mounted if you can, at a high shutterspeed 1/500 ish. If they are sharp then the lens is fine.
When you use it next at full zoom use Tv mode,(shutter priority) and select a shutter speed of around 1/320 minimum. Raise the ISO if you need to. Find out what speeds you can use it at without introducing camera shake.

ill try that thanks

Don't forget folks, this lens has IS

you should be able to hand hold this at 2-3 stops slower than you expect IF the subject is static and not moving of course...

I can hand hold my 70-300 down to 1/30 if I am very careful.....

Oh that's a point I missed! throws a spanner in the works.
Make sure if your doing the tests on the tripod that IS is turned off.
Conversely ,make sure when your using the lens hand-held that its switched on!

Tripod test and shutter release cable required as it all depends on how shakey ones hands are. The IS should imporve this though but again depends how shakey your hands are. Remember IS off on tripod, I always forget, dont know how much difference it makes.
