 Have had slight concerns that my 35mm 1.8 isnt quite as sharp as I had hoped. So I just done a brief comparison with the vr kit lens and this was result..

1st shot is kit lens and second the prime. both 50% crops

Well fair play to jessops they have swapped it straight over. The new copy certainly seems much sharper so maybe it was a lemon.

If you're doing test/comparison shots you should really use the same settings both times, otherwise the results are meaningless..........

you should really test things like this on a tripod. Dunno what aperture you used but at f1.8 focussing that close your depth of field could just be a couple of millimetres so if you move even a fraction of an inch after focussing you throw it off and it appears the lens is soft. Hopefully if it was a lens problem then it's sorted now :)

35mm for both, shot at f5 iso 400 high shutter speeds to eliminate handshake etc...both 50% crops..not a scientific test but enough in my mind to conclude it wasnt as sharp as it should be.

Yes mate and it certainly seems better. Quite surprised at how much better too!

If that was a 50% crop at f/5 then I'd say that lens was definitely up the creek. Good you got it replaced.
