FD lenses on an EF camera (Canon 5d) - can it be done

Sure. You can buy FD/EOS adaptor mount on ebay or Amazon. Your options are a AF confirm one to keep autofocus or amanual one, which is cheaper, but has no chip so your lens will only work manually.
 
Yes it can. But if you want to keep the ability to focus to infinity you'll need an adapter with an optical element in it which will drop the IQ of the lens.

If you already have a collection of FD lenses then you may as well. But if you're just starting out I'd suggest going with a different mount which uses lensless adapters.
 
Unless you have L series FD super telephotos, then it is best to look for Leica R, Zeiss, Nikkor or Olympus glass. Canon made a small batch of FD to EOS adapters/teleconverters, but they only fit their monster lens line. The cheap HK copies really destroy the quality of lens, and in any case you lose 2/3 stop of light.
 
Thanks - I haven't got any FD lenses - just looking for some cheaper ways to use some older and cheaper - but high quality prime film lenses on a full frame camera (5d MkII) - preferably with large apertures - in the 85mm+ range
 
Canon 85mm f/1.8 is about as good as it gets under £300. Leica might be better optically, but with possible focus error it is really reduced. Canon 200mm f/2.8 is another bargain.

In WA range Olympus 19mm (or is it 21?) really rocks.
 
Also a problem with using adapters on a FF camera is the mirror could hit the back element of the lens depending on the lens you're using.
 
thanks for advice guys - sounds like i'll be sticking to looking for an 85mm 1.8 ef again
