Hi all,

I'm on holiday in the very south of South Devon. East Prawle. The weather is gorgeous, and we're not far from the sea at all (we can see it from our amazing house). It got to about 8.15 ish and I looked out to see and thought the light looked spectacular, so decided to take a trip down with my camera, tripod, 16-85, NDs and NDGs. I'd been reading up, learning lots, thought I knew what I needed to do, knew about halving/doubling etc but when it came to it I just froze.

I srambled over seaweed covered rocks to get to a point I liked the look of, set the camera up, and then completely forgot everything. I just ended up guessing until I got a couple I was half pleased with. Even those I'm not too ecstatic about.

Have any of you been through this initially, and did it get any easier?

Cheers
Simon

It's called learning and I bet you learned a lot from your experience

I dunno. It was pretty much trial and error in the end, swapping filters until I got something half decent.

I agree with what you're saying in principle though. The more I get out there, the more I'll learn and actually understand why

Wait till you do it in a studio that is costing you a fortune with a model and make up artist! lol

Yes, it is called learning and if it helps try to picture what you are going to do before you get there. Write it down if you want to. I have books full of scribblings! That kind of previsualisation is something top sports people do and it does help. Get yourself in the right mindset and you will be fine :)

Thanks for your reply. I knew what kind of shot I wanted, but it was more the meter readings, and what filters I needed, and when I realised I wanted to stack an ND with a NDG I got all confused and completely lost everything!

Just need to keep practising

there's good step-by-step article in last months Digital SLR Photography showing how to break down the seascape shot into finite steps

did you see it ? not implying you need the basics..:D... but had some points i think
