Yes
Had a fall whilst out on the Wyedean yeserday unfortunatly my lens was the first thing that hit the ground, now wont focus and there's something rattling inside.
I took out accidental damage cover when I bought my kit from Jessops but I don't really want to take it back to them, could I send it back to Tamron ?

Why not take it back to the vendor (Jessops) if you spent extra money buying extra cover for instances like this? They will no doubt send it off to an authorised Tamron repair centre, and if it's BER I'm sure you'll get a like-for-like replacement...

I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong, but that seems the way it is with Addidental Damage cover regardless if bought from Jessops and the like or somewhere like Argos.

If you took out the cover, use it - why pay the extra money otherwise?

That's a no brainer. Use the damn cover. Simple:shrug:

What I meant was could I send it directly to the repairers using the insurance bypassing Jessops ?

Depends on the terms of the insurance I suppose, I'd get in touch with the insurers direct, assuming they are independant from Jessops.

No you can't. Go to the shop and you should walk away with a new lens. I don't think it would be economic to fix it.

its homeserve that covers jessops stuff IIRC, well my 24-70 is (via jessops) , and you should follow the instructions on the Documents you should have recieved through the post a few weeks after you got the lens.

Accidental damage won't have anything to do with jessops . you take the cover out with homeserve. they may tell you to return it to the shop after issue with a claim number or something?

me again

sorry, my mistake. It's Domestic and General and they clearly state to contact them first.

where did i get homeserve from

I did the same thing, got a 70-300mm, took it out for it's first outing to Temple Newsam, got a few shots off of the house and decided to get a bit closer.

Decided that as I was obviously a "proper" photographer with my shiny new telephoto on it's tripod, that the best thing to do was sling the whole lot over my shoulder and wander (swagger :)) down the hill - no point wasting time and light, by putting it safely in the bag.

It was only as the birds stopped tweeting around my head and I'd disentangled the tripod from around my neck that I thought it might not be the best of moves.

A thorough washing off of the mud, couldn't disguise the rattling sound it was now making and after another two hours with my screwdriver set, I decided it might be best to phone the insurance company.

After the nice lady took all of my details and I thought, "ah well a few days wait wont be too bad" she innocentley asked what happened. Decided to tell her the whole story as my embarresment had worn off by now.

Oh!, she said, "your insuance doesn't cover for accidental damage OUTSIDE"

:bonk:

Good news phoned Domestic & General today and they gave me a job number and the number for Camtronics, they are picking the lens up tomorrow and said as long as it is repairable it will be back in 10 days.

It won't be back in 10 days, just ready for that one :'( As for not going via the store I'm wondering why you would want the hassle of dealing with D&G rather than getting Jessops to act as the agents?

Because it saves me 2 early morning trips to Jessops Cardiff on a Saturday and when I took my camera back there for repair it took over a month.

Ah that makes sense! But the time taken will be down to the repair agents and you've gone to the same ones as Jessops will have to use. They always quote 10 days but in reality it does take up to 20 working days, take in to consideration the fact that these guys don't work weekends and you'll have your magic number

But at least it will get sorted, even if it does take a little while that's why I have the same D&G cover on my equipment and I'll extend it when it's passed the 3 years!

i have the D+G cover for my 24-70, but i read the TnC's last night after seeing this post, and i don't think its really that useful.

Heres a few of the points i wasn't aware of:

if an item is deemed BER, and they have to issue a new lens, then the policy is terminated.
water damage or corrosion isn't covered
being lost or stolen isn't covered

theres more than that, but i'm a little miffed at the claim of 'whatever happens' for obvious reasons.

i payed £90 for three years cover which doesn't seem such good value now. On the positive side the policy states you can get a full refund up until the manafacturers warranty expires, so i'm thinking that this money could come out of this policy and go towards some proper camera insurance.

Another good reason to go via your local store and have them act at advocates on your behalf.

It's no secret on here that I am a Jessops store Manager and I can say 100% how things work in my store. If you have had an accident and the item in question is damaged beyond economical repair a current replacement should be given. Forgetting Jessops as the point of selling, insurance companies will always try and recover their costs. With a store Manager acting as the go between there is a little more leverage. I had a case in the last few weeks when an Fuji S5 pro (D200 in disguise) had a mishap just 3 months before the end of the three year policy. We had a letter back saying that they would offer a percentage of the cost of a new camera. I said... *******s I personally hold the same policy as the customer and new for old would be more appropriate as I could not continue to sell a great policy with pro cameras if I believed that when it mattered you'd lose the lot.

She got a D300s

and her policy cancelled ?

Ok, so is this jessops policy or your policy? I'm a few hundred miles away and my chances of getting a manager like yourself could be slim.

my main concern is the lost and stolen part. I'm thinking more about valua for money. I've not done any research yet, but i would think £90 would go quite far and cover all my equipment for all the things i would like to be covered for.

Does no one take out personal possessions on their home insurance? Read the policy check its right for you, ensure you have the right cover. Job done. Loss, theft, accidental damage, inside outside, in a concealed part of a car and new for old.... Only thing it isnt is a warranty in case of general wear and tear but thats never covered anyway!

To cover against loss is not the policy of D&G the camera has to be handed in to redeem the cover. Theft will be a matter for larger cover such as house insurance. But the sales assistant should make this clear when he or she sells the policy on behalf of D&G. If you have had the camera stolen the nightmare will start as 99.9% of house cover with contents away from the home will charge £50 excess per claim then the policy as a whole will go up when you renew. The £90 you paid vs £50 excess and the increase on the main policy not to mention loss of no claims is still good odds. Even if you only drop it once.

I will say that the cover covers the camera you bought on day one, so new camera, new warranty, again this should be made clear from day one at the point of sale.

The manufactures warranty is often not all it's cracked up to be. You have to prove that the fault was there from day one and that is was down to them. Outside of the 30 day (depending on the seller) money back guarantee. Extended or accidental cover eliminates this completely. You do have piece of mind.

Had a call from Camtronics today lens fixed and will be back with ne on Tuesday

Well its back and its working fine paperwork says replaced HELIROD whatever that is.
But its mint like new not a scratch:thinking:
