What's the purpose of felt lined lens hoods ?

Is it so they're less likely to reflect any light that enters ?

I've just noticed one of mine had it - so thought I'd ask.....

You've got it in one

It absorbs any stray light so that it doesn't reflect into the lens and cause any flare :)

Whilst I'm 100% in favour of lens hoods, I suspect the flock lining makes a marginal difference at best. As long as the interior is matt black I'd think it'd be pretty much as effective.

Of course... someone is going to prove me wrong in a minute :)

cheers

It's to trap all the lint and fluff currently floating around in your house...:D

ahhh yes, i have noticed this happening with my canon hood.

I thought that's what your belly button was for :)

I made a lens hood out of belly buttons once, and it was immediately rendered unusable due to being caked in fluff and toe nail clippings.

To make you feel like the round bit of plastic for your 24-70 is worth the £50 you just payed for a replacement. ;)

Also, if it can be reversed and stowed on the lens, it won't scratch the lens.
