what file format do you prefer my camera allows me 7 diffrent formats i can use these are

NEF(RAW)
JPEG fine
JPEG normal
JPEG basic
NEF(RAW) + JPEG fine
NEF(RAW) + JPEG normal
NEF(RAW) + JPEG basic

I mainly use JPEG fine as my laptop doesnt accept NEF photo file formats

but my newly orderd pc does and i was just wondering if i should stick to JPEG or go to NEF and what your opinions are on the diffrence it makes

Hi. You need a raw convertor for the NEF fies usually comes with your camera or photoshop. Stick with jpg for now. I shoot raw or jpg depending on the event but dont waste space saving both together.

I thought adobe camera raw could be downloaded by anyone and then you can import the raw files do the basic edit and then export as tiff, dng, jpg, etc other than being a bit slow your old pc will open them. I'm a Lightroom user so I may be making that up but I don't think so!

RAW all the way.

The camera also comes with NX Capture which will allow Raw import and also editing.

hmm okay then thanks guys think i might switch to NEF once i get my new one set up gunna put lightroom on that as never wanted it on this one so if lightroom can do them that should be fine thank you all :)

I do a lot of shooting in .NEF for importing into Lightroom - as Boliston says, edits are stored in a catalogue and with it being non-destructive, I'm not taking up loads of space with saved copies.

I do shoot in .NEF + JPG (normal) when covering events; the .NEFs are the files I turn to for final reproduction but if an image is required to be viewed there and then, or needs to be uploaded to a webpage SOOC, then the jpeg suffices.

The key thing with shooting in raw is the additional space you need - a .nef is probably three times the size of a fine JPEG so that has to be accounted for with regard to had drives and memory cards.

If you're using Lightroom then you may want to consider importing your raw files as DNG format.

Why? Because it's an open format, unlike individual manufacturers proprietary raw formats. Plus there is no separate .xmp file to lose when moving files around.

I use NEF for the majority of photos I take.

Occasionally use JPEG for product photos at work when I occasionally have to do them as the only PP I do then is removing the backgrounds.

I've never toyed with the DNG format when importing into LR, simply because I know LR supports .NEFs from the camera I own. If there's suddenly a shift towards .DNG by all software manufacturers then obviously it'll have to be reconsidered for future-proofing my archive.

As for .xmp files, LR doesn't store sidecar .xmp files like ACR does - it all goes in the LR catalogue so providing you have the LR catalogue and the files, there's no issue, so long as you want to continue to operate in Lightroom, and not flit between LR and another program - that's when issues will arise but that's why i chose LR as my imaging solution and PS as my external pixel-level editor.

I never ever use raw.. JPG all the way for me ..

I assume that's more for reasons of getting images out quickly while at a sports event Tony? I take it shooting in raw would mean more time converting files and that's not great when you need to hit a newspaper quicker than the next guy? :)
