File Recovery

I know, I know... another one of these threads. :D

This may be a bit different though.

CF card with Canon RAW files and Video files (5D)... was formatted with a Nikon D700. Needing those files back now. Nothing has been done with the card since the reformat (no more images taken, etc.)

Usual image recovery software. PC Inspector, etc. None are showing Canon RAW files. One has "recovered" a 150mb JPG that looks more like the first still of a video file... So that's throwing me off. There were some Nikon NEF files from previous shoots on the camera as well, and NEF files are showing up. They are not, however, opening in CS4 or anything else.

I'm completely lost and bewildered and would appreciate any help.

My first port of call has always been lexarmedia.com's 'Image Rescue' with their 'low level recovery' option selected, I've been able to recover images from many media types and numerous levels of daft stupidity over the years.

*I* can highly recommend Image Rescue, others, will have their own solutions.

I can't remember the name of the software company, but if you search for CCleaner, the same company offer a free file recovery program which I've found to be excellent in the past.

I've never tried to use it after a format however, and to be honest wouldn't fancy you chances of getting much, if any, useable shots off of it.

this may do a better job of recovering . it has worked with nikon raw
it can do various reccoery including formated.

Cheers steve

Well, I'm actually using some forensic software that my company uses for forensic work. It's one of the foremost softwares used for stuff like network collections of data, and data recovery is one of the things it can do.

I can see every file on the card, I actually just got a quicktime movie to play (so that's getting me hopeful at least haha). Still having an issue with the Canon and Nikon RAW files. I can recover them, but CS4 won't open them.

You may be seeing files with either a CR2 or NEF extension, but part of the file itself may be corrupted, hence the problem with opening them.

Try coping them to a new location and see if you can run them through the Adobe DNG converter. It may repair part of the damaged file. Also try something like XN view to see if can open them. It's strange but I have found in the past when an application such as Photoshop baulks at a file, another one will open them

Ok cool. Some of the files were taken immediately before the reformat, so I figured if any of the files would open, they would. But no luck on PS. I'll give those a shot as well as Lightroom, etc.

try this if its possible save the images as tiff the open in photoshop the save as photoshop raw.

does this help

this is a BTN solutions at least you have the images

Ok. I'll give that a shot when I get back home.

And yes, at least I have the images. haha. But it wasn't my card! So I'm trying my best to get this stuff back as shot for a friend. I'm such an idiot sometimes. :D

In the distant past I've noticed that some recovery software will save RAW files as TIFF. It may be they can't reconstruct the original format.

I'm pretty sure they are the RAW format. They'll open in LR and they'll open in GIMP after I installed the RAW plugin. I haven't had a chance to play around with it at home on my main setup though. I was at work with less than sufficient gear earlier. :D
