Hi,
I am after some advice on filters. I am going snorkelling and taking my 40D are there any particular type of filters that I will need? Am i right in thinking that you need different filters for the different colours of sea, i.e. light blue and dark blue?

Neil

You've a housing for your 40d? Don't bother with filters while you're in the water - you're wrong in thinking you need them then

I've seen orange filters used for underwater shooting, the counteract the blue, but it's pretty specialist stuff.

This may be old news too, relating to film. You should be able to do a reasonable job by shooting Raw and correcting in post processing. If you keep the ISO low and take care not to under-expose, then you shouldn't get too much noise - which is one of the dangers of making big colour corrections such as this.

I personally don't think i'd use any filters. You might want to take a UV filter if it's a sunny place your going to though!

No need on digital, the only use is as protection for the front element (eg I use one when shooting rallying to protect from flying grit and gravel).

yep - and in an underwater housing or bag then the risk from flying stuff is non existant
