I am travelling out to the Caribbean over Xmas and NY and want to do some sunset photography as well as some seascapes.

What filters am I best to buy? I was looking at the Cokin P series starter set but will the grads be strong enough? One is ND2 which most people seem to think is not very useful.

Can someone please give me some advice?

srb griturn square filters are good budget option. They use the same size as the p series so can mix and match. ND2 is only 1 stop which is the less useful. The ND4 is the most usual followed by the ND8. Then you need to choose between hard and soft grads or buy both.

Would you suggest just buying an ND4, ND8 and a big stopper then? Plus holder etc?
 
You could just get away with a ND4 hard grad and a ND8 soft grad. For the coking P system a Lee big stopper wont fit as the P system is 85mm and the Lee stopper is 100mm. Although i'm not sure Cokin do a 85mm big stopper i think Hitech might. Also if your buying the coking P filter system be sure to get the wide angle lens holder. I would also put on the list a solid ND filter like a ND8 and get a Hoya pro 1 digital circular polariser.
 
As a cheap starter kit its ok if your not serious about using filters, othewise i think it best to buy the exact kit you need seprately.

Personaly i would avoid the cokin and invest in some decent filters as most people seem to buy coking 1st then upgrade when they find it inadeqate for there needs but your spending some serious cash on that kind of gear.
