I have a 77mm filter size lens, when using the Cokin 85mm filter holder i can only use my 16-35mm lens from 22mm onwards as you can see the filter holder between 16-22mm, would a 100mm filter holder be better and allow me to go wider

Absolute novice with filters here so go gentle on me
 
I had a quick play with the Lee system on the 16-35Mkii (82mm thread) and found that 22mm was about the limit wide open and 20mm was possible by f/8. These figures are for a FF body so a crop will fare a little better.

You can get a slim filter holder for cokin P 85mm?? (it`s non cokin and cheap). holds 2 filters instead for 3. pretty sure that there is no problem at the wide end with the 16-35. Will check tonight.

Or you can hacksaw off the first 2 holder bits, leaving room for 1 filter.

just a suggestion of darkening in 1 corner @16mm on a nikon 16-35 ff.

think you need to look for a wide angle slim filter holder.

Ive also got a cheapo 85mm plastic holder which holds 3 filters, ill "trim" it down to 1 and see how that goes
