Hi,

Have read so much about the filters on here.

So i was thinking of things along the line of:

As i would be a complete newbie to this, i thought it best to buy a complete set, as in filters, holders/adapters and instructions.

Basically, like a box set of everything i will need to learn and use without having to buy loads of different things.

This will be used on a variety of different lenses for a Canon EF lenses...

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Thanks for your help in advance.

As my started kit i got a hand-me-down cokin holder and 5 x graduated filters - also bought myself a UV, a circular polarizer, linear polarizer, sepia and a skylight .

Yep, second Cokin. Used or new they're cheap and although maybe not as good as Lee kits, they're really easy to get hold of.
I actually bought a load off ebay a few years back from some photo supplies seller and for a couple of NDs, an ND, holder and adaptor it came in at under £40, which I thought was good value. These were new as well. Think the holder was a Cokin copy but the filters were official.

Have you got a polariser? I've found that with polarisers you do have to spend a bit (the cheapest aren't cheap, maybe £40-60 for a screw-in one from Hoya) and the bigger your lens the more you'll be paying. The good thing about Cokin P filters is you just buy the adaptor to fit the front of your lenses and you can use the filters on them all.

warehouseexpress is a good starting point

Hi thanks all.

Was looking at the Cokin Z set, because it will just fit on my lenses making it easier, cheaper etc.

However, i also wanted a kit that had the filters with them, like the ND Grad etc, just so i can learn how to use them, whilst not spending a fortune.

Anyone able to point me where i can get the filters for the Z set, then i can just slide them in and out. All i want is the Filters that control the sky etc so they dont blow out, and i can get the images without using HDR all the time.

Thanks for your time people....

Formatt/HiTech are another alternative to Cokin.
I've ordered the bit's below (only one adapter as both my lenses have the same filter thread) for just under £50 delivered.

Grad Kit
3 Slot Holder
One or more adapers

I'm hoping the plastic holder is OK as there's no picture on the website, but the price is in line with the Cokin copies available on eBay.

The also do another ND grad kit where you can choose which three filter strengths you want.

Edit: These are the same as the Cokin 'P' series, not the 'Z' series though.

Sorry Jim trying not to look daft here.

But does this fit on the end of the lenses, i have some that are all different sizes, so was thinking that the filters would slot into the holder at the end.

So basically i have 1x Filter holder fits all my lenses from 20mm up to 100mm, and then if i wanted to use the ND Grad i slot that in on one lens. Then if i wanted to use another, would slot straight on. And are the filters like cards?

Sorry if that sounds a bit daft...

Picture is from the Cokin site, but HiTech, Lee etc... all work pretty much the same way.

Adapter ring screws onto the front of your lens. The size you need depends on the size of the filter thread, not the focal length of your lens though. Sorry if that bit seems obvious, but your mention of 20-100mm lead me to think you may have the wrong end of the stick there. If your leses have different thread sizes, you'll need several adapters, but they're only a few £ each.

Holder fits onto the adapter ring, and the filters fit into slots on in the holder (so yes, they are a bit like cards).

Got it, i will need different adapters for my different lenses so thats ok, i just didnt want to by it expecting it to fit all. Thank you for that...
