Filter order on the lens

I am sure this has been asked before but there are lots of threads to check through...

If I am using more than one filter at a time (I am probably thinking CPLR and ND Grad) does it matter in which order they go on the lens? Secondly, is this even sensible? Just bought my first ND Grad and I am beginning to think about using it now and it occured that landscape incorporating water may benefit from both. Am I way off track here, it doesn't seem so to my logic?

You'd need to be watch out for lens vignetting when stacking filters unless you were using oversize filters such as Cokin ones. The problem I would have with it is that it's using two filters which are both going to be prone to flare to some degree.

I think I'd be inclined to decide which of the two filters is more important in the particular circumstances and go with just one.

Put the grad on first. If it goes on top of the polo, it'll rotate and you'll end up with some...interesting gradations

But for the main part, try it and see. Take shots with and without.

If like many you use (or look at) the Cokin series you will see Polar goes first followed by grads, I have done this for 20 years and had no probs.

Can't rotate in a modular system eg Cokin if you keep the grad upright the ND rotates separate.
