hi guys
Going to try a few winter landscape shots this yr ..
With xmas just around the corner ,thinking of getting the missus to treat me to a filter starter set ...
Lens l will be using will be as follows hopefully these will be ok ..
28-70 f2.8 L
24-105 f4 L
Thinking of the hitech range but which size & which set to start with ..?
Remember missus buying :oops: :$,so £100 max !!!
camera will be 5D2 .
Any input will be helpful
 
I'd suggest getting the 100mm ones, then if you get any wider lenses in future you won't have to sell and buy new ones
 
Get the biggest size wide angle adapter for your lens, and as suggested get the 100mm ones.
 
Would a hi tech 85mm set be suitable for the above lens ?
As a m8 got a set for sale very cheap !
 
Could I have more info on why will I regret it later if I got 85mm filters ??
As haven't got a clue on filters & never used them because landscape pictures is not my normal subject (Motorsport is my normal field)
 
Because they will vignette is the biggest reason. They aren't physically big enough to cover wide angle lenses. If you get anything wider than 24mm in the future, they will be useless. They may also slightly vignette on 24mm. 100mm filters will cover you for everything, unless you go medium format.

If it's your mate selling, why not try them on your kit to see how much vignetting you get?

Having gone from circular to 85mm to 100mm I can honestly say you should just go straight to 100mm and save yourself the headache later down the line.
 
100mm filters starter set where would be the best place to buy & which set ??

Lee foundation kit with wide angle adapter ring is best, after that Hitech. to start with go for a 0.6 nd hard grad, 0.9 nd hard grad & a 0.9 nd soft grad.

If you wanna save money on the filter adapter and wide angle ring as lee are very expensive, you can get copy's with are very close to lee but not as good quality but do the job just as well. like ones being sold on ebay from filterdude.com

Also there are 2 books from Lee filters "inspiring professionals" 1 & 2 which will give a good idea how to use them.

General order of quality - from high to low (although some people with have some difference options):
1) Lee
2) Hitech
3) Cokin
4) Kood
5) Zomei

Generally you do get what you pay for, but also probably depends how frequent you use them. In an ideal world you'd just get Lee filters and that would then probably be the only filters you ever need to buy.
However for instance I have Kood filters. Yes they do have a slight colour cast, but that is removeable in PP. For my use I find them perfectly acceptable.
 
Best advice is don't buy cheap go for the best you can afford either Lee or Hitech, Cheap filters can have a horrible colour cast and eventually you will end up replacing them and spending more money.
 
made my mind up going to go with the 100mm hitech filters
