Just wondering if there were any issues to consider with stepping a 72mm to a 77mm filter size with a cheapy ebay £3 adapter?

If your lens has a 72mm thread and you step up to a 77mm thread and use a 77mm thread, I think that is (TBH) an excellent choice, you should be fine!
