filter stuck on lens!

TFFT... :D

Now go take some photographs... ;)

wa-heyyy...well done you - was just about to suggest hammer and cold-chisel...

this sticking filter happens to me a lot and I dont have frozen bags of peas in the car, what I find never fails is a short sharp slap with the palm of my hand directly onto the filter and has never failed yet, you must hold the lens tight before doing this of course.

Surely not tightening the filter too much when you put it on in the first place is easier! :suspect:

my hoya CPL gave me great problems the grip part of the filter is less than 1mm wide :(

jim I dont tighten it too tight, am not sure why it does this at all, doesnt happen everytime I might add, thats why I think a sharp shock does the trick, if it was over-tightened am sure this wouldnt work.

we have an item in the house to remover tops from jars...guess that is a wrench

the advice given about holding the filter tight is quite critical...one really needs to apply pressure evenly around the edge

the tyre idea is brilliant

To stop it happening again, lightly rub a pencil around the thread on the filter and lens (be careful not to get the dust on any elements of course).
Also, get some filter wrenches, cheap ones from fleabay will do (BTW. The cheapo ones I got, are plastic through and through, no rubber at all).
If you ever get to do any filters with rotating front ends, then unfortunately the flip/flop, marigold route won't work.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but i'm having this problem with a CPL filter stuck to a UVC filter right now. lol

Got them both off the lens but impossible to get the CPL off at the moment, as it obviously rotates both directions.

They're currently in my fridge, hoping that one contracts slightly more then the other and i'll be able to get them apart in the not to distant future.

Wrap a wide elastic band around the CPL several times, this will give you something to grip, and should help stop the rotation

Personally I would not do ANYTHING which involves hitting a lens or using wrenches or anything else!

Lenses (especially those with IS) are precision instruments and need to be treated as such.

They may be able to take some shocks but ideas such as extending the lens barrel etc and then applying a deal of force are (IMO) definite no-nos!

Whenever I get a lens and intend to put a filter etc onto it I lubricate the lens thread with a tiny amount of light oil applied with a cotton bud or some such.

Then put the filter on with light finger pressure until it is on.

Prevention (and thought) is better than cure - or damaging an expensive lens.

I think you have to take some of the advise with a pinch of salt ;)

Well that worked a treat. 10 minutes in the fridge and they came apart straight away. I'm assuming that one of the filters contracted or expanded when removed from the fridge quicker than the other. Perhaps a bit of condensation on the thread may have helped ease it too.

Will use some lubricant in future.

I realise that but some people may not.

And the levels of stupidity (not on here!) to which some people can stoop is, quite frankly, almost unbelievable.

About a year ago I had to put a graphics card into a computer for a friend because someone else had tried to make an SVGA cable fit - with a hammer!

When the cable wouldn't go in he resorted to sheer brute force - not realising that a pin in the computer socket was bent!

He did finally get it to fit - then told her the monitor was kaput because it didn't work!

You did not mention if it`s a zoom lens. If so, tread warily. Hold the lens extension with one hand, place palm of other hand over the lens front, press down hard and turn the hand.
