Filters and holders?

I've always used circular filters so far but I've only had the kit lenses with a 58mm thread. Now that I've bought some decent lenses and making to move to FF I don't want to skimp on my gear.

I want to get some sort of filter holder for the usual filters (nd and nd grads). It will be for my 24-70 f2.8 so I will need a ring of 82 mm, but that's all I know when looking for one lol.

What's a good brand of holder to get?

Can you fit other manufacturers filters into them as long as they are the correct size?

I'll also be getting an ultra wide angle at some point. Will I be able to use the same holder but with a different adapter ring?

Also, I'd like a polarizer filter. Are these only available as circular ones because you have to turn them round for the effect?

I've not really got a budget because I don't have a clue what the average prices are for a holder and different filters.

There is the Hitech filter holder and filters which do a great job on the 24-70(Sigma and Tamron), If its the Sigma lens then the 82mm adaptor ring and filter holder and 100mm filters are fine.I had these then went to Lee, my biggest difference wasn't the filters but the lens itself as i bought the Nikon 24-70 which has a 77mm front element.I have now gone from Lee to Progrey as i also have a 14-24 which Lee holder isn't great and allows light to leak in past a 10 stop filter.Happy with the Progrey filter so don't discount it.
 
Lee holder (used on ebay) and kood filters for a start will do the job. You can upgrade to Lee filters if you make enough sales.

I couldn't recommend hitech holder. The locking mechanism is very unreliable. It is just a flat ring with screw down the side - if it is a little loose everyhing goes on the ground. Lee is much more secure.
 
Thanks both, I'll have a look at them. Sorry forgot it's the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. I will be getting a wider one eventually, I'm just getting my basics sorted just now.

Sales? That's the nicest thing someone has ever said to me lol. I don't sell any images, not unless someone asked to buy any which I highly doubt will happen. I only do photography as a hobby but I at least try to get nice shots (y)

Colour cast on the Kood filters used with the Cokin P drove me barmy, didn't look too bad till got shots with the Canon 15mm side by side showing what colour it should really be, so recently upgraded to Lee holder system, and Lee filters, well just two for now, building them up slowly.

Colour cast won't really bother me. I've used a lot of welding glass before my current ND filters and a quick custom WB of the welding glass pictures brought them out great. Saying that though I will eventually be after some Lee filter, like yourself though I'll be building them up slowly. The Big Stopper is the main one I want because my current 10stop ND is only 58mm thread.
 
Have a look at hitech firecrest for their 10 stop filter, there is very little colour cast. The lee bigger stopper has a slight blue colour cast. If you are new to filters hitech are worth looking at. I currently use Lee nd grads and hitech firecrest 6 and 10 stop in the lee filter holder. Hitech firecrests are roughly the same price as the lee little/big stoppers. One of the reviews that pointed me towards tgf firecrests was this one.

For full ND yeah fixing the cast is easy, 5D used to make a mess of the B&W ND, one touch click done, grad filter is more of a pain in the arse, particularly if like me you don't want to spend more than 5mins fixing a shot in lightroom.

That's the one with the strongest colour cast of them all. They also break very easily if we believe the internet. I'm still shooting with screw in ones, on those very few occasions the weather conditions are right.

P.S. If you buy HT firecrest, make sure you actually get sent firecrest version, as some big retailer likes to take chances with sending the cheaper version.

I've been using a circular Camdiox ND1000 10stop filter, but it's only 58mm thread for my kit lenses, which I've now replaced. Can't fault it at all if I'm honest, no colour cast and you have to be extremely picky to notice any sharpness loss. Only cost me £40 as well.
