Hi Guys.

I'm stressing a little bit here.

I've just bought a Lee Big Stopper/ I'm also wanting to purchase sone high tech filters. Mainly to use with me Sigma 10-20 wide angle.

So my question is, what size ring do I need, what holder will hold both hi tech filters and my Lee big stopper and what hi tech kit to get?

I'm proper stressing about this :(

I'd go for a

1x Lee Foundation kit (not sure if the Lee Big Stopper will fit in Hitechs holder)

1x Lee Wide Angle 77mm adaptor

And then whatever hitech filters you'd like. Make sure they're the 100mm ones and they'll fit nicely in the Lee holder. If you're going for ND grads, I'd go for the 100 x 150mm as oppose to the 100x125mm as it give you a bit more room to play with. Any other type of filters will be 100 x100mm.

Spot on. The lee foundation kit is superb, and the 77 mm wide adaptor ring again lee is the one you want for the 10-20. You may need to take the front filter holder off the foundation kit to stop vignetting.

I think that what Dave meant is that 10mm is pretty wide. If you use the Lee foundation kit as it is supplied, it has slots for two filters to be used at once. It's possible that the outer slot will block light entering the extreme corners of the lens at 10mm and so cause vignetting. The way to get around this is to remove the outer slot. It all just screws together (screwdriver included in kit) so you can add and remove slots as much as you like. You can also screw a circular polariser holder to front if you ever want to use one of those.

spot on, although I am sure my foundation kit has 3 slots. I also have the polariser holder on the front which shows under 12 mm with all 3 slots.

I think you're right actually. I think mine was supplied with two slots installed and another pair of slots included. I rarely use more than one though as hitech filters don't seem to like being stacked.
 
I'd like to give these Lee filters a go but I've not used them yet, still have my screw-fit type on a Sigma 10-20mm & Nikon crop body (same as the OP)

Can you use the Big Stopper on it's own or do you need an ND Grad or 2 along with it?

I'm looking to get coastal shots and sunset/rise when I'm on holidays for Easter :)

You don't have to have one with it but it does add something to the sky for sure.

What filters would you all reccomend to start off with, along with a HiTech 10 stop?
 
No need for the 0.6 or 0.3 ND filters to begin with then?

I had this in my mind

Foundation kit
77mm Wide adapter ring
Lee Soft ND grad set 150mm
Hitech Big stopper
 
0.3 grad is fairly useless either hard or soft. Been there, done that.

0.6 hard or soft are worth having but if you want to save some cash I'd go straight for the 0.9 hard and soft. I find these two (the hard in particular) by far the most useful. I rarely carry any other grads.
 
I see what you mean. You want to recover some of the foreground detail? Hard to say without being there but a soft grad might work best here. 3 stops is my default choice but anything will help. The only issue you might encounter here is that the height of the sun is lower than the rock on the right so you'll darken the rock with the grad if you leave it horizontal. You can of course you them on a slant which might work ok. Either way, I'd still say, 3 stop hard and soft cover me 90% of the time.

One last thing, I know it's a taboo subject, but sometimes HDR can help...
 
One other thing. I'm not suggesting that you immediately run out and buy one but if sunrises and sunsets are your thing then you maybe should also consider a reverse grad. This is basically a soft grad but with the darkest running across the centre and fading to the top. They're ideal for sunsets as the sun will be low in the frame.

Went for this setup in the end so hopefuly I'll be kitted out for some nice landscapes when I'm away :cool:

Lee Foundation kit
77mm Wide adapter ring
Hitech Big stopper
Hitech soft grad kit
Hitech hard grad kit

The grad kits are only 125mm though but they'll start me off I guess :thumbs:
