Filters for portrait photography

Nope, not really, unless you want soft focus a la 1980.

I have one of them there soft focus filters It has a clear bit in the middle and then softens towards the edges. If you like that look I'd imagine it'd save a lot of work in PS.

A polariser can help if the subject has glasses...cloning out relections can be a little torturous in PP.

Damien lovegrove uses a mist filter to reduce contrast (I think) - details on his blog page in the last month or so
