Hi Folks

What’s the difference between a single coasted and multi coated filter?

I am thinking of buying a B+W single coated 10stop ND but I see there is a multi-coated version for twice the price.

Cancel, stolid app is playing up, I'll retype later

Here is a pretty straightforward explanation

and an interesting set of tests on UV filters (2007 but still relevant today)

Your problem is also that when using a 10 stopper the coating/multi coating question while relevant is just the tip of the iceberg. You are also contending with very long exposures, camera movement, colour casts and more which will also effect the outcome of your shots and throw all sorts of other aberrations into the mix. I haven't used a 10 stopper so the merits of single or multi coating on that particular filter would be better with further discussion by 10 stop users who could give you a better idea if its worth it. Bearing in mind some people (with experimentation) get great results from Welding Glass

Great stuff, thanks for the info.

Was a good read, now but know why they are twice the price
