I was given a bunch of filters with the Minolta Maxxum 3xi I just bought and was wondering if someone could tell me what they do/when to use them/what effect they produce? I've never used filters at all. These are what's written on the filters themselves.

  • cokin A122
  • cokin A083
  • cokin Champagne
  • Sunsoft/cokin
  • This one just has a 4 in a circle next to an A

New ones I've just discovered:
. photax polarizer 55mm
. kalimar uv 55mm
. hoya 55mm +2
. hoya 55mm +1
. hoya 55mm +4

think the A122 - is a graduated blue - therefore will make a sky look bluer (unless you use it upside down)

Other cokin ones may be found here

Thanks a lot guys, that's great :D

I've edited the first post to include names of ones I've just discovered in the bag.

just as an aside.......... I assume most of these are / were made for the film market - as a lot of the effects can be produced PP with digital??????

Therefore are there any benefits in using some of these filters on digital media?

I suppose there's the romance of 'getting it right in the camera', but unless you're a masochist, largely no. :)

(god, they did/do make some awful special effects filters)
