When i bought my kit 2nd hand it came with some filters made by polaroid for both lenses it came with 52m & 62mm

Polaroid UV
Polaroid Florescent
Polaroid Circular PL

I assume (apart from protecting the lens face), the UV one blocks UV light, but what are the others for? Florescent has a bluey purple tint and the Circular PL is medium to dark grey

I would be interested to find out what they are and how they would help my photography

it turns out the 62mm Polaroid ones do not fit the Tamaron 70-300mm lens as its as if the threads are different and don't catch, but a UV MFS filter on it when it arrived does screw on a lot better, is there any tricks that might help to make them fit?
 
The UV filter (suppose to block UV light) but since we shoot in digital now and i don't think UV light will cause too much of a problem (not like in the film days). UV filter is more like a lens protector these days and it serve no other purpose other than causing more problem like flare ...... is up to you whether you use it or not. I use to have UV filter on all my lens but i took them all off now and the image like much better.

CPL filter is use to reduce reflection and glare and is like a pair of sun glasses for lens.
 
A little bit more research, it looks like the CPL lens when srewed on, there is a section that rotates still, looking through the camera the sun reflecting off the car outside was less when i rotated it round, a bit like my polorised sunglasses, so i guess CPL is polorised, good for my landscape shots and iff water is reflecting bright light.

Still not sure what my florescent filter could be used for, so off to google for that

I had heard about the lenses flare, and experimented with this when on my hols and it did go when taking the same shot without the lens on, but protecting the lens on hols is worth a little flare for hols shots, but can be removed for more photography shots i plan to take.

God help me when the tripod comes and i get the 10 stop filters:lol:
 
A fair few people use a lens hood to help with lens protection which also has the primary role of reducing flare to start with. Obviously won't stop something being able to hit the lens but reduces the chances.
 
uv filter flare only really bother me when taking shots indoor and night landscape, so those time it definite off. Pretty much off full time now except i shooting in extream weather where sand, mood etc can easily get into the front element of the lens.
 
CPL stands for Circular Polariser. Plenty of info on the web already about what they do and how to get the best out of them, so I won't repeat it here.

What I will say, however, is that I find them the single most useful accessory I own, and wouldn't leave the house without one in my kitbag.
 
The Fluorescent filter I think is to reduce / stop the colour cast you get when shooting under fluorescent lights.

It is a non issue on digital as you can set the colour temperature to suit the conditions (my Canon has a fluorescent setting, your may have the same?) On film any shots taken under fluorescent lighting had a green cast to them.

going to have to give the CPL filters a go though, i like the effect it looks to give by loosing the shine of lakes from pics i found
