OK, having a bit of a clearout and found a load of 58mm filters. Only cheap ones from 7dayshop, I can vaguely remember buying them

My question is mainly what they are used for.

There is:

  • Blue
  • Orange
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • CPL (???)
  • Graduated Blue
  • Graduated Grey
  • Star 4
  • Soft Focus

I don't think the coloured ones would be very useful, but what about the rest??

Coloured ones are for black and white film...the others are useful if you need them...

Of those, only the Star 4 would definitely go in the bin if I found them...

Graduated grey will be a ND Grad, useful for landscapes and balancing exposures between bright sky and dark ground.

I'm guessing coloured filters are either for interesting effects or film photography to add/decrease contrast..etc.

CPL is a Circular Polariser (zer?) It gets rid of unwanted reflections on glass and water and also makes the blue of the sky much more..... Blue!

The CPL one twists around once attached...

Whats that all about?

The star one... I just done a few quick tests and never noticed anything!?!

Through the powers of witchcraft, the turning ability of the Polariser affects its effect!

If you go outside with it held infront of your camera, once you look down the viewfinder and rotate the end of the filter around you will see the sky darkening and lightening.

And it does lots of other good things too.....
