I have 2 filters that were donated to me they are a 72mm Tamron CPL filter
and a 72mm UV filter, what sort of conditions would I use these in? and what effect on the images would they have?

The UV filter none at all.

The CPL use it on bright sunny days, it cuts out reflected light so skies will be bluer, colours richer and clouds better defined.

Cheers

Many thanks Hugh

The UV filter does what it says on the tin really, cuts out a lot of the UV rays the sun produces. Takes away the haze that UV rays create.

The CPL or "circular polariser" is the one that gives you fluffy white clouds and rich blue skies (only when a clear day).
The other advantage of the CPL is it helps eliminate surface reflections on things like water, glass and shiny objects.

The CPL is a two part filter, the front rotates on it, point it at a blue sky and rotate the front, you will soon see why and what it does.

Also great for taking shots of water where you want to reduce or remove surface glare, in fact if the water is clear it will allow you to see the fish below the surface

The UV is good for reducing damage caused by stones and sand being thrown at your lens of course :)
