Could someone put me right about the use of filters,if your taking a photograph of a scene where you have got a mooooody sky,sun setting, mountains in the distance, what is the correct exposure for this scene,to have detail still in the mountains/foreground.I've been experimenting with some filters and cannot get the exposure right, sky o.k (moooody).but no detail in the trees( in the garden),tried 0.6nd,0.9,graduated filters. What am I doing wrong ??, Thanks.

are you spot metering the foreground then the sky, working out the difference, setting the camera to manual using the meter settings for the foreground and a nd grad of the correct strength to balance the sky ?

Taking a regular meter reading should usually get you close, and then chimp the LCD/histogram/blinkies and tweak until you've got it right.

You don't say what's wrong exactly. Post a pic?

Set your exposure for the trees and whatever else is in the foreground.
Then with a Graduated ND filter you can get the sky to expose properly and have the forground with detail too.
