filters

No such thing, you need different filters to do different jobs. If there was an allround filter that did everything it would be part of the lens as standard.

Would you say that there is a all round filter to use in most situations ie uv/ polarizer/ if so what would you use

 What something like this you mean  Hoya HRT filter

I've not personally used one but I knew of them as I've asked about these a while ago on here....

In order of usefulness -

* CP - Can be used to enhance an image in a way that's totally impossible with software.
* GND - Has an effect that can be replicated in software, but never with equally good results.
* ND - Specialised uses where a very slow shutter speed is required in bright scenes.
* Special Effect Filters - things like Star filters - Can often be replicated in software (if you should ever be sad enough to want to).
* Coloured filters - Can normally be replicated easily in software.
* UV/so-called 'Protective' Filters - Can easily be replicated by using the 'Blur' and 'Lens Flare' tools in Photoshop.

Sorry - there are a couple of mistakes in the above -

HRT filters - Used by ladies of a certain age*

UV filters Ultra violent - used by the SAS on their cameras.

* I hope this terminology does not offend. :)
