Hi ,I'am thinking of buying a set of filters for a bit of landscape work,the question is which type, Cokin Z Pro or Lee.I know Lee filters are a bit more expensive and don't really want to spend an arm and a leg but then again don't want to go for the cheaper option to find out there pants.Been having a look around and read an article that was saying some of the N.D. filters from Cokin was showing a pinkish cast on the final image (this could probably be removed in photoshop but don't want to start and do this),so as anyone got any info,which one's do you use ? many thanks :thumbs:
 
A mid-way point may be to look at Hitech / Formatt filters. These, like Lee, are made in UK but aren't as expensive as Lee.

Keep in mind, there's that old saying "buy cheap, you'll cry twice". Personally, I wasn't happy with Cokin.
 
Agreed. Cokin Z's are supposed to be better than the P's but I still wouldnt want to risk it. Go for Lee or Hitech and know what you are getting.

i found my Cokin ND Grad to be ok as long as you use ONLY one

reports suggest that stacking Cokins - say a ND [to reduce exposure] and a ND grad [ to hold back the sky] can introduce a ''cast''

for the price of a Cokin ND Grad = give it a try..:D

Unfortunately the Cokin I had, and had them for years and years, were always giving me colour cast; while the only colour cast I got from Hitech was with the 10 stop ND. That said, price-wise, Cokin were, and still are, excellent :thumbs:

It is very reassuring that there are those who are happy with Cokin, good competition is good for us end-users .. always :thumbs:
 
I had a set of Cokin P grads and ND's. Horrible muddy/magenta cast from all of them. This was a few years ago mind.
 
Thanks for all the replies, one more question, if I bought the Lee foundation kit filter holder, will the hitech filters fit in ???,to me that would be the best of both worlds with the money I want to spend. Thanks:thumbs:

Yep!

I think the hitech filters arw slightly smaller than the Lee's, but the width is the same so they still fit.
 
I've just bought the foundation kit and the hitech defo fit as do kood. As mentioned above buy the best you can afford or you'll buy twice. I've got the full set of Hitech but have just had to start rebuying due to buying a sigma 10-20 meaning my 85 mm slots are to small:( I've just bought a Lee 3 stop soft grad and I can see why they're the most expensive. That said I think the kook I have is great and that was only £18.

Hi Bri, I really like them. You can buy them in a pack Aswell from teamwork digital. Most of the shots on my flickr were taken using them. Buy Lee if you have the money or Hitech if you can't stretch it. What size do you need?

Which ever manufacturer you buy, what would be a good starter range of filters for landscape?

I already have a Lee foundation kit which I believe is 100mm?

What do you plan on using these for. I want to do some landscape work and experiment with long exposures of water etc.

ND grads alone wont be much use for long exposures. You'll need the big stopper or the hitech equivilent for that.
 
That's what I thought but the big stopper is no where to be found and from the reviews on the hiltech version it produces a colour cast?
 
Just looking into a 10 stop option and was wondering what the B+W ND 110 was like?
 
Hi Mark, yes all stock items, will have a go with these first,then I may progress to the Big Stopper,generally I do wildlife so this will be something different,will keep me entertained when I cannot find anything with fur or feathers.I'am going down to Norfolk for a couple of days this week so if they arrive in time(fingers crossed) I will have a play :D:D

The Hitech 10 stop does produce a blue colour cast, but it's easily sorted in Camera RAW. In addition it's available at £70 or so, whereas the Lee isn't available at any price without a long wait. I saw a set of Lee go for more than retail on e-bay last week!!!
 
The last few big stoppers on ebay have gone for over £200 on ebay, and they were used!

The Lee gives a slight blue cast too, its easilly fixed tho.
 
Ok, this may sound simple but I would like to ask advice on what to buy.

I'm going to have a day or so next week where I would like to photograph some landscape and water shots. It would be during the day as I would be limited to time. Can anyone recommend a kind of starter set / kit to use on a Lee foundation kit and/or a screw in filter?

One thing ive found is that alot of the companies say they have stock of Lee when they dont. They put your money in a holding account until they have stock then take the money as they despatch. I rang first to check and most of them were actually out of stock.

Did you get you filters from Robert White.
I was told that it will take about 6 months
