Hey guys, I have just received a Tamron 17-50mm lens for my birthday today !

I just need to ask, will it effect image quality with what filter I use on it? I would just like a simple UV filter to really protect the glass on the lens. 7dayshop have them for £3.49 haha ... but jessops are £23?

And second question, can any one explain in simple terms what I need to use these Cokin P series filters, the grey graduate seems very good !

There are so many arguments on here about this. Me personally I do not use filters as i always use lens hoods so the glass is 99% protected with the type of photography I do. My personal feelings on this are, lens manufactuers donot put filters on the front when designing a lens so why put one on afterwards???

Cheap filters WILL degrade the quality of the pic,

I opt to use filters, but only buy good quality. If you don't use a filter keep the lens cap on until you are going to take a photograph.

Cokin filters:-
You need an adapter ring with a thread the same size as the filter thread on the lens to be used.
You need the filter holder to go onto the apapter ring.
You need a square filter to slide into the filter holder.

Grad grey is a usefull filter as is grad tobacco if you want to warm up skies.

  • No UV/'protective' filter can improve image quality on a dSLR.
  • All UV/'protective' filters will cause some degradation in image quality.
  • The seriousness of this degradation tends to decrease as filter cost increases.
  • Good filters will cause degradation that is not noticeable under most conditions.
  • All filters, even the best, will cause noticeable degradation in some conditions.
  • Image degradation is worse with longer focal lengths
 
As a working professional of many year's standing, the overwhelming majority of my shots - hundreds of thousands of them - have been and will continue to be taken with a protective uv filter fitted. You need specialist equipment to see any difference between shots with and without a uv in virtually all circumstances.

Never once has a client complained, nor have I ever lost a sale, through using a uv filter.

But do buy a decent one ;)

Thanks guys, sorry if this has been covered a millions and one times lol. I did do a search.

I ended up buying a cheap skylight filter from jessops with a voucher I got for my birthday. My plan is to use tat to protect the camera for every day use and when I am doing work I will remove it, so as not to hinder image quality.
