Hi,

I want to get a graduated ND filter for my canon 24-105mm f4 lens but i'm not really sure where to start. I have looked online at a Lee adaptor ring (£19) and filter (£74) but that is pretty pricey and if I eventually decided to buy a prime landscape lens or wanted to use the filter on something else, would I have to buy a different adaptor ring? Would I want hard or soft graduation? What is the difference? And then there is 0.6, 0.75, 0.9, kits etc.....

Is there a cheaper but decent quality way of doing this?

I purchased cheaper kits and in the end I regretted it as I ended up buying twice!!

Personally I'd get the Lee foundation kit & adapter, then maybe some 100mm hitech filters if you can't quite stomach the price off the Lee filters.

If you decide you don't like them, lee kit will sell for near new prices and WHEN ;-) you decide you do like them you've got a great kit to build on

Edit- you'll require the foundation kit AND adapter ring, the filters just don't fit into a ring.
The bonus is once you have the kit you can just buy different sized rings

It's so mad that the foundation kit doesn't come with the adaptor ring or any filters. This is an expensive game!

What about the hard vs soft graduation and the 1 stop, 2 stop or 3 stop filters?
 
If you primarily want to shoot landscapes then I would advise just getting one or two Lee filters. Personally I find the 0.6 hard edge and the 0.9 soft edge are used the most with occasional use from the 0.9 hard edge. I don't think you'd need more than these three ultimately.

Lee kit is expensive but you do get quality :)

Got all mine from Dale Photographic, very reasonable prices and great service. (y)
 
I have to agree, the Lee Filters are expensive but well worth the money. I mainly use my .6 and .9 hard grads.

If you buy cheap you often end up buying twice. Lee Filters are quite an investment, but the quality is superb and the ability to capture better shots in camera means you soon forget about the price.

I also often use my grads carefully positioned over the whole lens as a full nd filter, thus avoiding the need for also purchasing lee nd filters.
