Hi, just looking at filters for photographing various subject matter and understand the basics of what yellow, orange and reds do.
However im not quite sure of sizes for my lens. Remembering back, am i right in saying the lens shows a '⌀ symbol' and thats the size i need to buy?
Ive just bought a camera (on its way) and has a nice 40mm lens but dont know what the filter size label is from the photos i have. I intend to use for landscapes and would like to maybe buy an orange or red filter for some extra drama to the shots.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as always.

Ps. looking at infra-red filters too, looks tricky. Has anyone got any examples of their own infra-red work?
 
Based on what I've found for a bronica sq 40mm f4, it takes 95mm filters which aren't likely to be sensibly priced new and aren't all that common so difficult to find used too. If the petal hood is removable, you might be better off with a lee or cokin filter holder and square filters. I swear someone in the F&C section said a cokin square filter can be pressed into the hood and held there with an elastic band.

Hoya and B+W both make great screw in coloured filters.
 
That will work provided the hood is removable.
