finally finished my website!

Hi Sophie,

The first thing that I noticed was the weird text (it's) after your site name and it looks like "what i do is" covered by a line. There are also spelling mistakes as mentioned earlier.

Helpful critique doesn't have to be as blunt as a brick though, there's a way of being polite and helpful.

Why do I keep having to bang my head repeating the same thing over and over again? It's not that hard to be sensitive to the other person when being critical is it?

Marcel I must agree with this. Whilst I agree with many of the points raised sometimes what's written and how it's read are perhaps two different things.

Sophie - you have learned that posting here is tough. We can only give our own opinions. You are at an early stage and you need time to develop as a photographer. Spelling is important to create the professional image of yourself and the points raised here are designed to help you - not put you down.

Regards your website name, I think this is one of the most important things to look at. Whilst it means something to you, you need to detach yourself from that. I use initials too but am thinking of changing to something people may remember better.

Keep practicing and the only person that matters in this is you, if you are happy keep it. All others can do is try to help (I think the advice was given in good faith at the start). It's up to you how you take that.

Don't feel downheartened, the opposite feel happy that you have people prepared to help you get better.

Regards
JD

Yes I noticed that and mentioned that on my post. I thought it was possibly just Safari not rendering the site properly.

I am now getting nasty personal and racist PMs from this person 'ROBPHOTO' who may or may not be a friend of the OP!

Its a tough world Sophie life is often taking one step forward and two back. I think you have done well with the site. People have given you honest views regarding it, there were errors, maybe these could have been pointed out in a more sensitive manor, but the world is full of people who may or may not care for your feelings. As you begin working you will meet a lot of people whom you cant stand, you should be professional and courteous to them, after all you may want there repeat custom. I followed the link to your site and at first was greeted with the "you are viewing the site of the text version" and informing me I needed flash player. I use google chrome browser and windows vista on a modern laptop, so that may be an issue for some. It works perfectly however with firefox browser. So now the the constructive criticism. I personaly find sites with a dark background suit photography. I wouldn't show flowers as black and white, but thats just a personal preference. I agree with comments regarding the font, don't find it particularly attractive. But overall I think you have done well, keep at it, listen to feedback and improve on your work. Good luck, oh and try using google chrome web browser, its got a built in spell checker, used it at least half a dozen times for this post.

kinda have to agree with marcel to be honest, you could kinda see how this thread was going to end up from some of the responses.. while i would of taken it on the chin, some arent as thick skinned as i.

maybe it was constructive criticism? :D

wow a jock throwing in the "racist" card thats the funniest thing i,ve read in my whole life  (its a joke ) ha ha

could i also suggest smbphotography.co.uk

i want to say thanks to the people who've actually made me understand in a helpful way, I think i'm going to cancel this account and make a new one, then i can start a fresh. thank you to people who are thoughtful on here though, sensitivity goes a very long way. (:

Hi Sophie,

I am glad to hear you are going to be sticking around and giving us another go

As I said the guys and girls here are a great bunch and will give you helpful and honest advice, some times that advice may be a bit blunt but it is usually not done out of any kind of vindictiveness.

Wishing you well.

Take care,

Keith

To be fair i don't think anyone has been nasty or harsh.I would love for people to tell me honestly what was wrong with my site (if I had one) and help me out.

Sophmb, I think that you can dispense with the line that begins: please don't hesitate etc
I don't think that it's necessary, and after all, I don't think that you really want anybody to contact you about anything at all, do you? Also, the general practice on websites is to refer to an 'us' as in 'contact us'. So that's OK. Well done for getting your pics up on your own website. I would suggest that you get into the habit of tighter editing - if two photos are similar, just put up the best one. Keep on shooting - it's all about getting lots of experience, take the time to reflect on what you've shot and above all, have fun doing it!

Hey Sophie,

Hang in there, if what you do gives you pleasure then nothing else matters.

'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'.
The criticism may have been blunt but it was valid and almost entirely correct. While it may be a trifle upsetting the best and most mature thing you can do right now is suck it in and use what you've been offered to make you better at what you do. I've employed many, many people in my life and I promise you, a healthy and willing attitude will serve you much better than complaining because you don't like what you hear. So will an ability to look critically at your own work.

Don't use your age as an excuse, it doesn't look good and it doesn't help you.

good luck.

Just on another note... you say you are working 6am - 7.30pm 5 days a week...

Thats 67.5 hours a week.... and even on minimum wage of £3.57 for under 18s, you would still have a top line of around £12k... thats more than some families I know earn.

So please don't complain about having no money!

Cheers ;-)

i understand what you are saying and i will take it on bored so thank you for your comments, im an apprentice and the minimum wage for that is £20 a day so money isn't the best at the moment but im sure once in qualified it will soon go up. thanks for your ideas and i will take them on bored

Soph - You don't need to justify your earnings to anyone.

Sophie, your site is OK for a first effort.......However, blunt as he may be in some people's eyes, AWP gave you some great advice. You can only learn by this. You will learn nothing by things like nice site, great stuff, etc etc.

thank you for your advice, just a bit of a shock, because i've worked so hard on it, and wasn't really expecting that sort of feedback really, just thought people would generalize and say, nice photos or 'I like this photo' etc... I guess I didn't know what to expect.

What would be the point of that?

Take on board the critiques, learn and develop. It may be a bit of a shock for a 17 year old, but I bet you don't consider yourself a child anymore do you?

Enjoy you photography, and enjoy learning from others with a little more experience, look at the negatives and change them into positives.

You did ask for feedback and that's what you got. Some posts seem to suggest that not only should you have recieved critique, but those offering it should tell you how to make a great website.........I think there is a limit what people can offer on hear ;).

Hopefully this has been a great learning curve for you, as someone said: "Welcome to the real world"

Good luck and enjoy your entrance into the adult world

Hi Sophie,

I think some advice is missing in this thread, so I thought I would fill that gap...

You are a photographer offering goods or services for a fee, as such you are acting as a sole trader.

There are a number of legal requirements which you need to be aware of:

1) As soon as you begin trading, you need to notify the Inland Revenue - you may be liable for class2 NICS although may be exempt initially if your work is sparse.

2) In order for legal (and other) documents to be served to your "business" effectively - you are required to put your name and address on your website.

3) Insurance - Not for everyone, but then you should make your own mind up on this one..

a) Public Liability (slip and fall) - in case you injure or cause someone to be injured through your actions or negligence

b) Equipment Insurance - depends if you can afford to replace your gear I suppose

c) Professional Liability - for when you let a customer down

All worth looking into.. hope this helps.

hi SOPHMB
i agree with what everyone has said !!

HOWEVER look at it this way if no one would had said anything bad about the web site you would not be changing it , i would hope you will correct the spelling (cant be as bad as mine) and keep going its good that some of the post are negative you cant learn if your doing it right!!! you can only learn when you have done it wrong

if you do another web site i bet you dont make the same mistakes !!

all the best and keep going :thumbs:

Absolutely, this being the first attempt is a very good one. Though you have to improve a lot but it won't take you much time to improve if you are keen to rectify and learn from your mistakes. There are plenty of suggestions that you have got until now and if you just take care of them in the next one you will be off to a very good start. Good luck!!

As a first attempt, its good. A lot of people have said all the right things, which need to be taken onboard

In addition, I would start by getting your own domain name. before buying it, get advice on the name
I would then put your photography in the front - show the work of immediatally.
I would then look at the space on each page and ask "Am I using it effectively?"

In terms of the texts, loose all of the bullets. Bullets dont need to be on everything. Make sure the message, especially in the banner "above the fold" is clear, consistent and 100% relevant

As I said, as a first go, its a good job. All of us have learnt, re-learnt, re-learnt again - It's the way things progress

Good luck, I feel you will get there

I feel we've all wasted our time here - 21 days since the OP and the website hasn't changed - spelling mistakes etc still there. Ah well.
